The sun was high in the sky, only just begining it's decent. The tall trees shaded the ground, causing a dappling the sunshine across the grassy ground. The sounds of the woods were constant - birds chirping, critters squealing. And of course the silent ones, creatures preying on their loud brethren. Slinking through the undergrowth, adding to the silent predators, was one fox that looked just a little too big for it's shape. The fox moved quietly on well padded paws, her snout reaching up and her nose twitching for tasty scents every few minutes. It was, after all, lunchtime and Réli was hungry. After wandering around the edge of town for most of the morning she had worked up quite the appetite. She contemplated the warbling of a few nearby Starlings, but shifted her thoughts elsewhere as the wind changed and her nose caught scent of a nearby vole. Lower herself, she began to slink towards the lone creature, temporarily blind to everything but the hunt. red headed vixen I swear I'd kill you if there wasn't so much paperwork I swear I'd [...] Fuck it. You're going to die now.
Federal Marshall Isi needed to pass the woodlands to get home to her vast estate in the outskirts of town. She was driving quite fast as her alarm beeped 'KBAND ALERT' alerting her to an up and coming possible speeding trap. Isi quickly slammed on the brakes after first glancing to see that no car was behind her. Then going at a slow crawl she tucked her alarm system into the glove compartment box and then re- locked it with her key. She never kept the thing unlocked for fear of nosy people. Needless to say that a vampire executioners car was packed full of things to execute. After a police car passed hers she was relieved.
All of a sudden Isi saw something in the woods. It was large and looked like a fox. But it was either a very overweight one or just larger then normal. Could it be possible that there was a were-abomination in the woods? Her woods? Well, they weren't her woods not this area but her home was in the middle of woods and swampland a very neat but sometimes deadly combination to any thieves that thought the best time to hit her home would be at night. And she wasn't even including all the quicksand areas in her deadly home equations.
Isi pulled off over to the road and put on her alert blinkers. She quickly wrote a sign 'out of gas no worries' and placed it inside her car where one could read it if looking over her dashboard. The road wasn't well traveled by any but who lived here or went camping but she had no doubt if someone passed by and saw her car on the side of the road they would call 911. Isi unlocked her side compartment and got out a box of silver bullets.
She was wearing tight fitting jeans and a black top that had no sleeves. It was not ideal were-killing clothes but she hardly doubted that a little fox would give her any trouble. Even if it was just a fox and not a human. She tucked the bullets into her bag after dumping the contents in the trunk, and getting a shotgun with silver shells. She loaded the double barrel with two silver shells, clicked and everything was good to go. She took a box of shell ammo after stuffing four more in her pocket. That was the difference between her and the cops. They couldn't afford silver and Isi could. Well, it helped to drain vampires bank accounts.
The Federal Marshal slammed her trunk down and headed towards where she had seen the fox. She wasn't used to hunting were-things but could kill them easily as they passed out from the full moon. Tracking little trails was a whole different thing entirely as Isi didn't have much patience but what else could that giant red thing be but human in animal form? Of course Isi was paranoid and her ancestors had been hunting and killing these type things before every human on the planet knew of their existence a few hundred years ago when they 'came out'.
Thankfully Isi was wearing regular gym shoes and not flashy heels she wore on rare occasion. The better to sneak up on vampires without the 'click click click' of heels. Her sidearm was in its holster as she aimed the shotgun in front of her as if ready to shoot. She saw tracks and decided to follow it and the broken brush. If she found nothing she could easily turn around and get back in her car. It wasn't as if she was sure it was a were-fox. Did those things even exist? Because no shifter in their right mind would be stupid enough to enter this forest. Would they?

The closer Réli got to her prey the slower she stalked. Luck was with her and the soft wind blew in her face, keeping the vole's scent strong and (more importantly) keeping her scent away from the vole. It didn't notice her, still scrounging for little bits of food around the woodland floor. She kept her nose forward, slowing until her steps where practically delicate until she ended up about two meters away from her prey. The fox gave a flick of her tail (keeping it above the loose leaf litter on the ground), wiggled her haunches into position, crouched and leapt.
Her jaws sunk into the scruff of the vole's neck and she quickly shook it side-to-side, snapping its neck. She was here to eat, not torture. Réli let it hang from her mouth for a moment, shook it once more (just in case) and then padded over to the roots of a nearby tree. She sat, dropping her lunch just in front of her, and tucked her paws under her. The trees above her shifted (or maybe it was the sun) and sunshine mottled her pelt. In the warmth she stretched out and decided to keep her paws untucked.
She was enjoying today. It was a lazy sort of day - just the right kind to be stretching out with a fresh, warm kill - where her Uncle hadn't needed her attentions. She'd bypassed to city with its constantly moving humans and its high chance of surprises. She was content for the most part. As a stray ray of sunshine hit her eye she blinked away from the angle, wondering to her self if the dry sun was somehow a bad omen for her almost perfect day. After all, so far only a rainstorm could make the day better.
Réli lowered her muzzle and opened up the tender underside of the vole and took a bite. Slowly chewing, she raised her head and looked around. She lowered her head for another bite and had only just looked up again when the wind changed. A foreign scent sent a shiver of alertness down her spine. She couldn't be sure, especially since her mouth and nose where covered with the vole's blood, but she thought she just might've smelt a familiar scent through the blood. The scent was familiar from smelling it often in her time away from her Uncle's home - the scent that covered every city. The scent of human. The fox swallowed and tipped her ears forward, trying to hear for any sound of the possibly-maybe-human. Her eyes flickered over the surrounding trees, trying to make out shapes. She'd have licked her jaw too, to try and clear her sense of smell, but it had been such a nice and calm day and Réli was quite reluctant to let go of the idea that she was imagining things.
((Oh, hello again Isi. Yes that's fine. Good to see you again.))

Federal Marshall If there was one thing to be thankful of it was that it was still daylight. Even if it was a were-fox or a regular fox there was no way that Isi would go into the woods at night with a potential were without night vision goggles and backup. But it was daylight and she had a nice pack a punch shot gun. She moved swiftly keeping on high alert. Any and Isi meant any sounds like a little branch breaking or bushes moving and Isi would be on it. She wasn't foolish to think those sounds might be a peaceful little rabbit and to leave her back unturned.
The forest smelled like a forest. The ground smelled earthy and the forest smelled like green mold. It wasn't a bad smell but Isi wouldn't be wearing it as perfume anytime soon. The dried leaves that were on the ground crunched softly under her ears. She managed to avoid steeping on any twigs and having them crunch under the weight of her closed toed shoes. Before she passed bushes she studied both of them on either side of the trail she was forging for any signs of movement. When it was all clear she passed the bushes.
Isi listened for any sound of animal life. She couldn't even hear any birds singing. Isi checked the time on her iPhone. What was she thinking? The only time she liked to kill werewolves or wererats was after the full moon while they were lying naked in the grass after a run in human form. They were so weak that it was easy, they wouldn't wake up for a day after they changed. She had always liked the thought of hunting werewolves in their wolf form but found it too dangerous and risky.
"What am I thinking I should just give u..". Isi had almost walked into a small trail of blood. If there was something Isi knew it was blood. By the color it appeared almost 'fresh'. She moved left and stared at the blood. It looked like there was a trail to the right. Isi followed the blood trail with her eyes and realized that she was looking at something ... "Oh shit!" she said as she fired blindly into the area she had aimed at, not wanting that 'thing' to pounce on her.

The fox had deemed it safe for the moment and dipped her head for another bite of lunch. Chewing, she looked up once more and concentrated as a stronger scent of human wafted over to her. She swallowed and licked her muzzle. Her heart began to speed up as some instinct told her that she needed to identify this scent a.s.a.p. She frantically cleaned her mouth and as the blood washed away the human smell grew stronger. There was definatly a human coming close.
Réli was just beginning to wonder if she should stay or leave when she caught sight of a partially obscured body off to her left. No sooner had she spotted the person had there been an incredibly loud sound that sounded almost like an explosion. Faster than she could decide, the fox was on her paws and bolting in the oppesite direction. It took about half a minute or so, but eventually Réli's brain kicked in and started supplying her with information. For instance, the 'small explosion' was almost certainly a gun. From the sound of it, she concluded it was a shotgun. The question though, was why anyone would be shooting at her with a shotgun.
The answer soon came to her. Of course - I'm a fox as far as they can tell. They probably have a horse nearby. Someone thinks I'm game. I'm a wild fox and that makes me vermin to human wild game hunters. Not for the first time, Réli really hated being a fox. It did, though, help her form a plan. She just had to run around for a bit to let the human think the chase was on, then she'd either outrun them, or hide in a log or something else that a normal fox wouldn't do. Having come up with this plan after quite a few tens-of-meters, the fox slowed her running slightly and looked about for any hiding spots.

Federal Marshall The chase was on. Isi opened the chamber of the gun and slid in another silver bullet. She still had no positive proof that the thing that she was chasing was actually a human in disguise but she would take no chances. The police would be 'trained' to decide whether to use their regular bullets and / or silver (if they had it). And if they wasted their silver ammo by shooting a regular non-were animal they were damned by the brass. Isi on the other hand had no such repercussions to await for her since the special bullets came out of her own pocket.
She was in good shape as she jogged around and through her property every morning for ten miles before she took her shower. But as in shape as she was, she was still human and the thing that was gallivanting away unfortunately uninjured had four legs and brilliant speed. Gun pressed against her shoulder she gave way to a fun game of chase. The best games played were not of cat and mouse but of cat and cat, every player thinking they themselves the cat.
For at this very moment Isi could be running into a well planned and well played trap. However since Isi doubted those were-things had any form of intelligence she did not give much heed to any sort of trap. Her shoes were made for running and this time she snapped branches under her foot, leaves spilled out of the way after such movement hovering a few inches off of the ground after they had gotten in her way before landing in a new position on top of other fallen October leaves.
'I'm going to get you. I'm going to get you.' Isi thought in her head. 'This would be easier with a tracking dog.' Isi thought again, not wanting to shout. She greatly doubted that the were-fox had human thoughts this very moment but had it she certainly wouldn't have said 'I'm going to kill you.' Isi had the general direction of where the creature ran but not the exact vicinity. Its fur blended in with the colors of the leaves. "Brilliant." she muttered.

There were lots of reasons for running. Running to something, running from something or just running for its own sake. The first was usually that last run up before the leap. Before the blood and the warmth and the crack of bones. The last was the most common reason she foudn herself running - it was just so much faster and somehow it always put adreneline in her veins. But the second reason was how she was trained. "There will always be people who want to hurt you." She had been rhetorical when she had asked if he meant game hunters - humans who wore those funny hats and shot deer. She'd been rather shaken when the reply had been that the threat might be a lot closer to home. Especiallyaccompanied by the glance at the Kain Alpha's latest letter to the estranged Kain household.
Réli was thankful for that - at least whomever was chasing her was a stranger. The people she knew wouldn't use human weapons. But no matter how thankful she was for it it didn't make her any safer. So she kept her eyes sharp and stuck to her improptue plan. Find a foolproof hiding place or do something a fox wouldn't do. Preferably both. Why is this forest so generic? was her exasperated thought. The trees were tall but, in this particular section, lacked any branches lower enough to jump up on. There where logs - some even hollow, but none good enough to crawl into and hide. The forest sounds flittered in and out of perception. In one moment there were birds twittering and in the next they were silent. Réli got the odd impulse to apologise for the smell of her fear to any of the animals that could smell it.
Then her pointed ears twitched to the side and picked up a distinct sound. A soft popping and a strong rumbling accompanied by a distinct tang in the fox's nose. There was a river nearby. Réli silently cheered and veered off in the appropriate direction. The river had come none-too-soon either; a fox can run for a while but at the speed she was going? She could hardly run like this forever. Through the trees, around and under the bushes, over the logs, she darted and dashed towards the wet sounds. Her plan wasn't the typical 'washing away the scent'. She knew that dipping her paws in water was more likely to either leave evidence of her passing or just get her paws wet rather than throw anyone off her trail. Besides, since when did humans pay attention to scent?
No, the fox had a better plan than that and the closer she got to the river the more likely it was that it would work. The thing she was betting on was that it would be a wide river and a deep river. If it was wide then any human wouldn't be able to get over it easily - depth would hinder any human willing to get wet. Ahead of her, the trees broke and the bank began. The rushing was so much louder now but Réli didn't think about what would happen if the river was too rough for her. Pulling up more energy (after conserving it since she had slowed down before) she put in a burst of speed. The fox broke through the barrier of greenery, ran to the edge of the river and jumped.
And for that moment all Réli could feel was the warm sun on the crown of her head and the comforting feel of water underneath her. She knew she wasn't going to make it to the other side, but (one of the few advantages to being a fox rather than a wolf) she would have no trouble swimming the rest of the way. For that moment, she wasn't worried.
((That's a ridiculous amount of words.))

red headed vixen I swear I'd kill you if there wasn't so much paperwork I swear I'd [...] Fuck it. You're going to die now.
Federal Marshall Isi continued running down the forest making her own path. Had she lost the fox? She was several yards behind it and it could have easily lost her. The hunter stopped and scanned the area looking behind her and to her right and left side. After determining to the best of her knowledge that the fox hadn't ducked back and was trying to sneak behind her or to the side she continued forwards, at a very brisk walk. She kept her gun at the ready as if the fox could jump out from behind a small leaf.
Isi searched the tops of every tree. She was thankful that the leaves were on the ground instead of in the trees themselves. Isi could see no foxes on the bare branches. "Clear. Clear." she muttered to herself. Isi checked behind her once more and then moved forwards. It was silly to move forwards. She should just have given up and returned to her car because the fox could be anywhere. It could have ducked into any hole. Hidden behind any tree. Hidden in any hole in any tree. It could be anywhere. Hell, it was probably possible for it to turn invisible the way things in the world were going now.
Why was Isi doing this? It was quite a stupid risk. Killing were creatures once they were weak in their human form after a full moon was one thing but going head first after a possible creature in a forest without backup was risky. It certainly wasn't like she needed the money. But if she killed this were creature she felt like she'd get a little bit of revenge for her friend Mercy.
It was horrible how her best friend and fellow Federal Marshal had gotten turned into a werewolf. It was funny how Mercy's name meant Mercy but she never gave any to the beasts the two slaughtered on duty or off before her change. But after Mercy got turned... she had kept her secret hidden for a while. But the Marshal's knew and Mercy got found out. It was left to Isi to take care of the disgrace Mercy had become to them.
No tears came to Is's eyes after her best friends death - by her own hand. This was not public knowledge. No tears came to Isi at her friends funeral. And none came to her eyes when she had to console her friends younger sister who was wondering where her missing sister was. If Isi hadn't cried then she certainly wasn't going to let her eyes fog up now!
It wasn't her fault that Mercy died. Why hadn't Mercy gotten the shot that would prevent werewolfism! Why hadn't she tried something? Why hadn't she avoided getting turned into such a monster? It was her fault. She had almost disgraced the Marshal's. Why couldn't Mercy have resigned or set off to a remote place like Bora Bora?
All of a sudden Isi heard something. It was either a stream or a river. If the fox had crossed that it was safe. And had Isi any dogs with her the trail would have run cold. There may have been tracks but Isi wasn't paying attention anymore. It wasn't as if they were running in mud. Broken sticks and any pieces of captured red fox hair wouldn't have caught Isi's green eyes.
"Holy shit. Am I luck or what?" she asked to herself as she spotted the fox trying to make it across the large river. She had the shotgun with her and it would splatter the foxes guts into slimy soup but that was a close range weapon and Isi needed something that cuold shoot at a greater distance. Since she didn't have a sniper rifle with silver bullets she would use her glock with a magazine filled with twelve ammo.
Isi put the gun on the ground, safety not on and pulled her glock from her holster. She licked her lips wishing she had the foresight to bring a bottle water. Though she could feast to great wine and mixed drinks after she killed the bastard. The only problem was that if she shot it in the water it might infect someone else. But that wasn't her problem. Isi wasn't even sure if someone could be infected by drinking the blood of a were animal in such a great water source as a river or stream or lake.
Isi aimed and shot at the were-fox. It was struggling in the stream otherwise it would have already been on the other side. Her shot missed as the fox was thrust in a different position by the water. Isi shot again, hoping to hit something of the fox.

Just as she had predicted, the fox finished the arc of her leap and landed in the river. Her heart jumped with hope and she struck out with her back legs to begin swimming to the other side. unfortunately, she never exactly got to the swimming part as the river was rougher than she'd assumed. The current picked her up and tossed her over making her do a sort of mid-water barrel roll. With a fierce shove of her forepaws she broke the surface but was quickly tossed around once more, a splash landing where she'd been moments before.
Réli kicked out, desperately trying to get to the opposite bank. She couldn't hear over the rush of water in her ears so she ended up jumping (which was more like a flail in her semi-drowned state) when the air just next to one of her ears transformed into a tunnel of wind that proceeded a bullet. Predictably, part of a root poking out of the bank in front of her exploded under the impact of a bullet, splinters flying out. Thinking and adapting the fox fumbling around trying to figure out the current. She finally picked up on it and started swimming along on the path of least resistance.
She swam with strong strokes but still flinched violently as searing pain hit the tip of one of her ears. A metallic glint just in front of her and the metallic tang mingling with the water confirmed it for her. She'd had her ear shot. Without giving it a second thought Réli dived under the water, half swimming and half being carried along the river. Shot me, shot me! was the most coherent thought going through her brain at the moment. Because firing a gun and being told that she might be shot was suddenly a world away from actually being shot.
The fox stayed mainly just under the water's surface, trusting in the river's distortion abilities. She came up for air (of course) and occasionally spluttered as water jumped up her nose or into her open mouth. It was becoming harder to swim as she tried to hold in her breathes and panting (panting underwater wasn't the best of ideas, after all) but the current carried her rather well. As long as she was completely submerged the river wasn't too rough. After a few minutes she squinted off to the side, catching sight of a root growing out of the bank. She pushed out once more, breaking the surface once near, and tug her clawed into the wet bark. Hanging for a moment Réli caught her breath, her hindquarters still being softly pulled by the stream behind her.

Federal Marshall The first shot Isi fired that missed brought up things from the bottom of the river. Roots and mud and little rocks that had been lying ever so patiently were brought up to the river top and their particles danced with the current to be laid to rest in a new spot wherever the river chose. The second shot that Isi fired had managed to hit the fox. Isi grinned with delight. She still had it! Of course ‘it’ never went away. Though she sincerely frowned when she realized that she had shot the fox in the ear. Could a fox even feel pain in the ear? But at least the animal was startled and when an animal was startled it made stupid mistakes.
The creature then shot itself down into the water. Though the water was blue it was slightly hard to see the creature that was in the water. There were other things that Isi could see a tire and empty beer cans and other various amounts of trash. Then as Isi was trying to look for the creature it bobbed up to the surface like a hippopotamus took a breath and dived back under. “Holy fuck!” Isi swore to herself. It was a unique strategy and it was either the smartest fox in the entire world or it had some human brains.
Isi knew now that she was fighting for her life against a were-creature. Maybe when she killed the thing she would have it mounted and put on her Marshal’s desk at work. The other Marshal’s would hoot and holler with laughter and she would as usual be the envy of all. Or maybe she would keep it in her home where it would look nice maybe in a silver frame on her wall. But first things first, Isi needed to kill the thing.
She decided that though her glock was great, it wouldn’t do the damage she wanted even if she could aim through this tough river current. She would have to risk using her shotgun again, despite the fact that even if she wanted to stuff the fox or put it on her wall it would have a very unpretty hole on its fur. Isi moved closer to the river so that she if she stepped one inch forwards she would be in the water itself. The hunter aimed the gun and waited for the creature to take to the surface for another gasp of breath. Then and only then would Isi shoot. “Come out come out my little pretty.”

As the fox's pulse levelled out she evaluated her position. Someone had been hunting her. She may or may not have just lost them. Weapons on hand were her fox body and its inbuilt weapons. Could also engage in a hand-to-hand fight, but that had a low chance of success since her hunter had a gun. The second she thought that her mind had a small panic attack again. A gun, she'd been shot with a gun. Even her Uncle had never actually shot her... just shot at her.
She considered her options. Of course the basic decision was the most typical one; flee or fight. Both had two options. She could flee downriver or up onto the bank. She could face the hunter head on or she could try drop down on them from a tree or something. If she'd already lost the hunter, then fleeing would be the better choice. But she didn't know if she'd lost them or not. Réli pushed her snout forward, trying to get past the scent of rotting dirt and wet river out of her senses. She shook her nose but the scents of the woods where too muddled by the semi-polluted river she'd been swimming in. She couldn't tell where her hunter was. By a passing breeze, she did get her barrings, however. She was a few meters down river - maybe about ten meters - but she'd ended up on the same side of the river as she'd jumped off.
Tossing her head back, the fox looked across the river. She didn't fancy trying to cross it again. A sharp wind blew over her head and a sting in her ear reminded her of the new chip in the tip. A short, low growl jerked out of her throat. In that instant, she knew she wasn't backing down from this. The hysterics were over and now the wolf was going to play. Fox. Whatever. The sky overhead darkened a shade or two as the fox hauled herself out of the river, giving quick kicks to propel herself into the woods and up the nearest tree.
Screw honour - Réli was going to drop onto the hunter and bite their trigger finger off. She probably didn't need to kill them. Just bite the finger and leave with the gun in her jaws. She could bring it back to her Uncle as a prize or a trophy or something. She was going to get a bite of this hunter, though. Around her and spreading further and further, the water vapour in the air pulled together and grew heavier.

Federal Marshall Isi waited patiently for the fox to rise from the water. The creature’s snout was easy to spot from above water. What was it doing? Where was it going? Before Isi could fire off a single shot she found the creature back again on the same side of the river that she was on. It was as if there was some underwater riptide that brought the thing back. “Just my luck.” Isi said as she saw the thing scamper up the nearest tree.
The thing was fast. In her mind Isi screamed ‘Fuck this’. It was only a puny little fox but it was still a dangerous animal. And Isi wasn’t going to risk her life. She wasn’t going to be as careless as Mercy. ‘Fuck this’ she screamed in her mind. Isi backed away from the tree, looking up at the fox. She began to move back the way she came towards her vehicle. There was no way she wanted to tangle with this thing.
Despite the fact that it was a fearful situation Isi didn’t resonate fear. She was worried, yet. But she wasn’t about to whimper and drip in fear anytime soon. She backed away slowly careful not to trip. Her gun was aimed at the fox. If it tried to leap down on her then she would shoot it square in the middle.

Up in the branches of the tree, the fox shook her head and sniffed. Birds to the left, rodents to the right... a pungent smell of water everywhere. She snorted to try and clear her nasal passage of extra scents. Stalking around the tree she sniffed in a few different directions. Third time lucky she picked up a human scent. The last time she had smelt the human's scent it had been muddled with either blood or Réli's own panic, but a human scent was a human scent. She headed for the scent.
The fox walked down the branch and leapt to the next tree. She carried on like this and only two trees later she spotted her new prey through the leaves. They looked female, with a red pelt that admittedly wasn't horrible at melding with the forest. They were a human - a human with guns. So you're the arsehole that shot me. thought Réli. Then she tensed, freezing in place for a moment. The human was looking right at her. She internally swore, reminding herself that, yes, she was indeed being hunted.
Realising that a surprise attack from above was no longer and option, the fox leapt into the next closest tree, hunkered down and let loose a growl from her belly. She wanted to see if the human would fight with it's guns again. Relying on them like crutches. She'd had the lesson hammered into her enough to trust no weapon but yourself - and to hone yourself into the best weapon you can be. If this got into a close-quarters fight and that human drew her guns then Réli would have to flee. But if the human was willing to fight without external weapons... well she'd still bite off a finger but she might be willing to loose.

red headed vixen I swear I'd kill you if there wasn't so much paperwork I swear I'd [...] Fuck it. You're going to die now.
Federal Marshall Isi needed to remain very calm. Anything otherwise would result in her either being mauled and eaten or joining the red fox under the moon in a month time. Neither of those options would result in being a good option for Isi. She would not be like one of those women in horror movies that when they ran to retreat they fell every ten feet on their ass in their underwear. Isi would remain calm and walk away from this situation backwards hopefully without stumbling and falling on her ass.
Isi watched the red blur of motion hop from one branch to the next, leaping from tree to tree. She was undoubtedly very lucky because had the leaves not been on the ground she never would have seen the creature on the first tree to know that it wanted to try some sort of airborne attack. It was what made these were-animals so dangerous; they had all the stamina and strength of an animal but the mind of a human.
Isi could see the fox looking right at her. It was frozen in place as was Isi. She was bracing for it to try and do some sort of jump attack – which would obviously fail with Isi’s shotgun. “I don’t know if you can hear me!” Isi shouted as loud as she could. Were there any birds in the trees they would have flown away from the sound of danger. “I don’t know if you can understand me!” she shouted as she looked at the fox. Her eyes never left the creature for any period of time. She even tried to force herself to not blink as often as one must.
The fox was growling and it was as horrible a sound as if a regular Grizzly bear was charging you. In fact, Isi would have preferred a regular Grizzly bear to any sort of were-creature. “Listen to me if you can understand me!” the red headed hunter yelled at the top of her lungs, trying to figure out what in God’s name she would say. “Let’s call this one a draw. Me and you. I’m going to go out of this forest and you’re going to go the other way. No harm done, okay? I’m NOT going to kill you. And you’re NOT going to kill me!”
It was sort of funny that Isi had said ‘no harm done’ when in fact she had practically clipped the foxes ear off. But animals were stupid and had a short memory anyhow. “This gun here is no ordinary gun. Got that? First off it has silver ammo. Real silver, not the shit fake stuff that con artists try to sell on street corners that don’t work and don’t burn. Second off. Okay.” Isi screamed as she continued on with what she was trying to say as she was daring herself to not take a step backwards. “This ammo packs a hell of a punch. It works pretty much like a bomb and your insides will explode with this punch. Got it?” she screamed realizing that she probably ought to have not spoken such long sentences. The thing probably couldn’t even understand her. No one had actually asked a were if they understood humans, they just killed ‘em. “Me go. You stay. You live. Me live.”

The fox's growls trailed over the first few sounds coming from the human's mouth. Tail swishing, still angry, she tried to concentrate. Just like she couldn't fully understand any canine while she had human ears, she couldn't really understand humans with a fox's ears. But similarly she still had some comprehension. The sounds from any human was just that - sounds, not words. But humans always put such importance on words, they put so many rules in place when the words didn't even really matter. What the fox could hear was intent. A call for attention (though the loud voice was enough for that), the placating surrender. Calling for a draw, because though the tone was of surrender it still held strength and power. Surrender, but not giving up.
Some words got through. It wasn't like she couldn't hear them - it wasn't like on television when the camera would give an animals perspective and all the human words came out as "Blah blah blah, blahblah blah bah. Blah?" Réli could hear the words and even knew what they meant in some part of her mind. It was just that the part of her mind that interpreted the words was in her human brain. So she heard the English as the woman shouted at her, but it didn't really mean anything to her vulpine brain.
Her uncle had trained her fox brain to understand a few key words: 'silver' and 'gold' being two of the most important ones. Metals that could actually really hurt her (though she'd yet to meet anyone who'd actually clued onto her excruciating reaction to gold). So she noted the word 'silver' when she heard it and even the fox understood that it was the gun being talked about. Her hackles raise in retaliation. First this human shoots me then it threatens me with silver? That wasn't quite right, though. The human was calm, which dampened everything she said and made it harder to listen to her. But the woman also seemed to be less threatening and more establishing her strength. Now that was something Réli could understand. She was doing the human version of swiping a paw at a healthy pack-mate before rolling onto her back and baring her belly.
The gun was still there and Réli wasn't vain or arrogant enough to think she could leap faster than it could shoot. As she studied it, the back her mind laughed at the feeling of the humans next words. The phrases were short and clipped and Réli was pretty sure she could match it with a style of speech she'd heard with human ears. Baby talk - how humans talk with creatures they consider lesser intellectuals or to be only semi-sentient. She wondered what made the human think that she'd be able to understand shorter sentences better than the longer ones.
A heartbeat or three and the fox made a decision. The gun was too close and she would be too slow and the gun would be too silver. She sat up on her branch, shoulders still low from the muscles being tense. She pointedly rubbed a paw over her clipped ear, reminding the human of what it had done and (more importantly) telling the human why she was pissed off in the first place. She'd been okay to run away before the ear. The fox lets out a keening cry, trying to tell the human in a fox's language that the human is not welcome here not while she attacks wild animals that don't attack her, anyway. She takes a few steps forward along the branch, tempted to jump to the floor but likely her height advantage a bit too much to actually follow through.
