Time passed, but the constants failed to shift. Vampires still drank blood, werewolves were still hunted across the world. The sun rose and set, and dread creatures stalked the streets at night. But they were not the only ones. After all, New Orleans was a city, and like any other city, it had a nightlife that many were loath to admit existed. The Red Light District worked 24/7, the working girls and boys changing with the sun and moon to cater to the shifting clientele. Some shops opened at sunrise, others at sunset. Sins were committed, night or day, vampire or human. Some were worse than others, but sins, after all, were sins. It was a good thing that the Catholic church didn't cater to the majority of non-human existences, otherwise confessions would be the most popular hobby in the city.
For the last few months, life had continued much the same as it always had. People disappeared, investigations were mounted, and eventually dropped when they couldn't find any leads. Everyone knew the truth, but without enough evidence, they wouldn't, or couldn't, do anything. It was the sad truth of the world. Those without knowledge were held in check, unable to progress, trapped by the ignorance that they held so close. After all, they didn't want to know the truth. The truth was almost always accompanied by pain. Pain so coarse and twisted that to feel it was too much. After all, death was a terrible thing, even for those who passed by it daily. It was the nature of living beings to survive, and when even that was taken away, there was nothing left but the pain. The pain, the terror, and the dreadful, sinking knowledge of the end. Humans had always struggled against the end. When one of their loved ones found it, denial was the first thing to rise to their mind.
With a sigh, Mikael Dorony cleared the train of thought from his mind. He was beginning to depress himself with all these morbid thoughts. Probably his fault for reading that philosophical treatise on the value of life between the different species. It had been written by a human, but his views had been quite tasteless. Far too morbid for his normal reading. It had been with great relief that he finally placed the volume back on its shelf. Then, to clear his mind, he had gone for a run. It had worked for a while, but niggling thoughts kept pushing into his mind. He was not, by nature, someone that thought about death. He much preferred living, focusing on the living, and how that life could be preserved. His library at home was extensive, focusing on topics from the physical to the ethereal.Of course, one could only read that many books if one had the time, but if there was anything he had, it was time.
Immaculately clad in a sleek business suit, he strode the night streets, hands in his pockets, eyes always searching. The streets were busy as always, populated by those who felt that the risk of the night was worth the fun that could be had. The restaurants were still open, but they served a different menu now. Life, in its vibrant and varied intensity, swirled through the streets of the city, and Mik watched it go, his eyes always watching, marking the changes, the shifts in emotion. Just like a junkie searched for their fix, the addicts searched for the vampires, needing the pierce of teeth through their skin, the rush of elation that followed. Poor junkies, they didn't know that the vampires that fed their need were just as pitiable as they were.
He drew to a stop at a street corner, waiting for the light to change. Humans and their endless technological inventions. It had been humans that wanted to fly like the birds, and they had chased that dream until they could. Humans had wanted to cross the ocean, humans had wanted to travel faster than their feet could carry them. So many technologies, so many dreams... They didn't want to stop. Either way, it didn't matter. They would continue to live, and so would he. That was simply the way the city worked. Sometimes easy, sometimes harsh, but it was always alive.

It's everything you wanted, it's everything you don't It's one door swinging open and one door swinging closed [/style][style=background-color: #ceb99f; width: 390px; height: 275px; padding: 5px;] If the night couldn't get any worse, there was probably no hope for it getting any better. Turned against her own child. Her own flesh and blood, it seemed silly that such a thing could happen. How could something so small and full of life turn against something so young and cold? Was Rowan truly that cold to her child to make Jezebel hate her? She had called her child when she woke at sunset, but the girl didn't want to speak with her. Was Rowan suppose to be angry or happy about this? Her feelings were all over the place. She couldn't see her beautiful child anymore or have any part in her life due to Alan's rearing of the child.
Stumbling through the streets, Rowan had her hand guiding along the wall of the buildings, just to make sure she was still on next to the buildings and not heading into the street to be hit by a car. It would certainly freak out the people of New Orleans to see that a vampire had been hit by a car and couldn't get out of the way fast enough to avoid the colluison. She didn't want to be blind anymore. Didn't want to depend on anyone. That was why she left Alan in the first place. Left her family and her child with her brother. So she didn't have to depend on anyone and they didn't have to depend on her. Now it was completely different. She had to depend on someone to be there for her to help her along the way. So she wouldn't get into any trouble and it caused her so much pain that she didn't know what to do with herself.
Tears fell from those eyeglass eyes of her, with no sight of anything in front of her. She didn't know where she was heading, nor where she was going. Rowan just needed to go somewhere. Anywhere. She hadn't even realized she bumped someone until she felt the soreness in her shoulder. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to." She didn't even know what was going on her mind was out of control. She seemed like she was spinning in circles, not even realizing she bumped into Mikael.

Instinctively, a small knife slid into his hand. He had learned the hard way that collisions on the street were seldom accidental. Pickpockets and cutpurses made a healthy living in New Orleans. After all, who would care about stealing from a vampire? If they retaliated, they could be harshly penalized. Not that Mikael worried about being penalized. Typical retaliation was public, a statement to be heard. Mik's on the other hand, was altogether quieter and private. The pickpockets that stole from him could simply disappear, and no one would ever be the wiser. Disappearances, naturally, were common in New Orleans, especially amongst the poor and the junkies. As for a pickpocket plying his or her trade in the vampire district, their sheer stupidity was without match. Not that he generally resorted to making people disappear. Far better to simply take back his money at a later time, leaving them none the wiser, and none the richer.
Mikael turned to face the erstwhile thief, but his rising arm fell back to his side, a small flourish of his fingers sending the knife sliding back up his sleeve. This, after all, was no pickpocket. It was hard to pick a pocket while blind. He wouldn't put it past some of the people on the street, but he had met this woman before. It hadn't been the most auspicious of meetings, but certainly, it was enough for him to know she was not trying for his wallet. His newly freed hand rose to her shoulder gently, attempting to steady her. She looked much less stable than she had at their previous meeting, at that ball. He honestly couldn't remember much of that night, but hadn't she had a daughter with her back then? He remembered a smaller figure there. Despite that, here she was, crying and alone, probably lost, in the middle of the vampire district.
The location wasn't entirely surprising. She was a vampire, after all, so this district was safer, in a way. The real question was why she was alone. Without a guide, she probably couldn't find her way through the streets of the city. Of course, he didn't know how long she had lived here. It helped, he had read, to have a schedule, a list of actions that one performed daily, building muscle memory and almost removing the need for sight. Not quite, though...not quite, especially when one hadn't always been blind.
Mikael winced at her apology, beginning to shake his head before he realized the gesture was pointless. "Rowan... It's Mikael Dorony, do you remember? We met at that ball... What are you doing here? This doesn't really seem like the place for someone like you."

She knew it had been vampire from the way the knife slid out of the sleeve faster than you could blink. Mikael Dorony. The name and voice sounded familiar. The Halloween Party. That was right. She had met him there when her daughter was present, but now her daughter wasn't here and she was a complete wreck.
"I remember you. I can't forget a name and a voice. I was going to say I can't forget a face, but I don't think I've seen you while my vision was present." She hadn't ignored his question about what she was doing wandering around the vampire district, she just didn't know how to phase her answer so it wouldn't sound like she was asking for help or company. Usually she found company in her drawings, but she hadn't been able to draw for the past couple of months she had been blind.
"I don't know why I'm here. I had to leave Danse Macabre because the noise was dreadful. Soren wants me dead. What am I suppose to do? Xavier was suppose to help me enhance my abilities of hearing and smell, but he hasn't set up a date or time on when he was going to help me." She was a wreck and she knew it, even her clothes seemed a bit weird for her, but of course she only had touch with her to actually know what she was wearing so it wasn't like she knew if her clothes were fashion sense or fashion wreck. Jezebel had been there to help her out, but Rowan had been relying on one of the humans around the club to help her out, so it didn't seem like such a bad idea, unless the humans were letting her go out and make a fool of herself in a crime of fashion.
"I didn't bump you that hard did I, Mikael? I don't really know where I'm going tonight." She didn't ask what he was doing here, because she didn't think it was something she had to ask. He could see. She could not. She was glad he was looking out for her, she didn't want to be one that got trampled on because she couldn't see where she was going.

He sighed, somewhat in relief. Otherwise, he would have had to explain his hand resting on her shoulder, almost protectively, as if holding her upright. It was interesting, wasn't it? A blind woman and a man without a real destination. Almost ironic poetry, that. Not for the first time, he found his eyes resting on the scars around her eyes. Holy water was a bitch, no doubt about that. Inhibiting the natural enhanced healing factor of their race. A scowl raced across his face momentarily. This was just needless cruelty, what had been done to her. She would have been a proud woman, once, under the wing of the master of the city. Whoever had done this... had not simply taken away her sight of the physical world. Whatever hopes, whatever dreams she might once have had, they were now all the more difficult to attain. Unforgivable.
Mikael's eyes had grown soft in his thoughts, but they focused once again as she continued. Of course... The Master's Second. Soren Rask. A thoroughly unpleasant bastard, if the rumors could be believed, and in New Orleans, Rumors had a way of echoing the truth. A pensive expression crept onto his face as he thought. Options? There were always options, choices to be made. The trick was choosing the right ones, so which one to choose now? She looked... almost broken, fragile in the moonlight, and he could still see the trails her tears had taken down her face. There hadn't been many rumors of Xavier recently, which meant one of two things. One, he might have left the city for a while, which Mikael deemed unlikely, if anything, or two, he was simply doing something so far behind the scenes that the city itself coul not see him. Of course, either possibility left Rowan out alone, and she did deserve better than that, he believed. Now the question had shifted to whether there was something he could do. As for the answer... He wasn't sure. He certainly couldn't heal blinded eyes, though he had tried reading several books on the subject. Nor was he conversant enough in the art of using the other senses to help with that. either.
There was a hint of gentle laughter in his voice. "Well, if you're looking for someone who knows where they're going, I'm not going to be much help. I know where I am, of course, I know this city from the inside out. I just don't have a destination. As for this trouble of yours... Soren Rask is an unpredictable individual, but that unpredictability makes him more dangerous than one might think..." He fell silent again, thoughts shifting in his head. "That being said, he has no quarrel with me. Hell, I doubt he knows I exist. After all, no one else in this city does. I've always just been a lonely ghost in these streets. Maybe it's time to... wake up a little." His hand squeezed her shoulder gently. "You have a choice, you know. I can take you back home, your house, where you might feel comfortable, or I can show you my place. After all, as far as places Soren Rask will look for you, I think my house is one of the least conspicuous options in the city..." His teeth bit down on his lip. It was a little presumptuous, wasn't it, inviting her to his place like that? Still, it was kind of hard to resist the tired, crying persona that her presence presented...very hard indeed.
